Do We Know Which Direction We Should Be Going? Risk Management Role and Risk Culture

3 October 2012
City of London

Since the introduction of the new regulatory rules (e.g. Basel III), risk management has been experiencing growing pressure. In particular, the “regulatory tsunami” and focus on RWA calculation and “optimisation” are consuming significant levels of talent and risk management capacity. Are we managing risks or simply executing the requests of regulators? How can we manage non-quantifiable risk?

If we are not managing the risk – then who is? The more procedural (e.g., regulation) and bureaucratic (e.g., committees, internal governance) the processes and activities become, the less the ownership and future focused the risk management agenda becomes. Have we already forgotten year 2008?

How do risk managers can add real value to business and influence a firm’s risk culture and what actions we can take to wrest control of the agenda and focus on the right mix of internal and external challenges to our collective institutions?
